GTA 6 Delay Timeline
Rockstar first targeted a fall 2025 release when it revealed Grand Theft Auto VI. The game then moved to May 26, 2026. In November 2025, Take-Two announced the second move alongside its July–September quarterly earnings, pushing the game back six months.
The current date has stayed in place since then. Rockstar repeated it on its official site, in the PlayStation Blog, after the August 2026 leaks and in the October 2026 Launch Trailer.
- Original window: fall 2025
- First delay: May 26, 2026
- Second delay: Thursday, November 19, 2026 (announced November 2025)
- Since then: no further delay announced
Why Rockstar Delayed GTA 6
Rockstar's statement on X gave polish as the reason: "these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve." Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said "Rockstar Games believes a limited amount of additional time is required for polish."
His shareholder letter did not give a more specific reason. Zelnick added that the company remained "both excited and confident they will deliver an unrivalled blockbuster entertainment experience."
What the Delay Was Not About
Around the same time, Rockstar fired about 30 to 40 employees in the UK. Take-Two said those firings were unrelated to the delay. Rockstar said the staff had broken company policy by discussing confidential information in public, while a UK union called the move "union-busting."
Take-Two also reported its quarterly results with the announcement, including $1.77 billion in revenue. The delay did not change the plan to release GTA 6 as a single-player title first.
Did the 2026 Leaks Delay GTA 6?
No. In August 2026, more than a dozen clips of real gameplay spread online. Rockstar called the leaks "heartbreaking for our team" and apologized for the long wait, but said the game was "nearly there!"
The planned Netflix Extended Look aired as scheduled on August 27, and the November 19 date stayed the same. See our GTA 6 leaks page for what was confirmed.
Could GTA 6 Be Delayed Again?
Nothing official points to another delay. Rockstar has opened pre-orders, scheduled pre-loads for November 12, revealed the Collector's Edition and released a Launch Trailer that ends with "Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19." Those are steps publishers take at the very end of development.
Zelnick has said he is highly confident in the current date, while acknowledging Take-Two has occasionally needed extra time before. Rockstar's official channels are the place to watch for any change.
What the Delays Mean for Players
If you pre-ordered for an earlier date, your order carries over to November 19. Pre-order bonuses are tied to buying before November 20, 2026, not to the original window. The Standard Edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition is $99.99.
PC players face a separate wait. No PC version is announced, though a GamesBeat report points to the first quarter of 2027. Follow the release date page and the countdown for launch-week details.
How Take-Two Framed the Delay to Investors
Take-Two announced the move to November 19, 2026 alongside quarterly results that included $1.77 billion in revenue and $1.96 billion in net bookings. It also raised its full-year net bookings forecast to $6.4–$6.5 billion.
Zelnick's message to investors was confidence rather than concern. He repeated that Rockstar needed "a limited amount of additional time" for polish, without describing specific problems in development.
Signs the November 19 Date Will Hold
Since the delay, Rockstar has hit every pre-launch milestone it scheduled. It revealed the cover art on June 18, opened pre-orders on June 25, aired the Extended Look on August 27, and released the Launch Trailer on October 15.
- Pre-orders live on PS Store and Xbox Store
- Pre-load scheduled for November 12
- Collector's Edition shipping on November 19
- Launch Trailer ends with "arrives November 19"
The Delay and PC Players
The console delays did not bring a PC version closer to launch. Rockstar still lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A GamesBeat report, citing four anonymous sources, points to a PC release in the first quarter of 2027.
That report is not confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. See our PC release date tracker for updates.
